When the morning queue reaches the door, the seconds each sale takes matter more than a long feature list.
Most of the lists that rank for this search today are written for shops in the US, Canada, New Zealand or Australia. A South African convenience store, forecourt shop or spaza needs prices in rand, VAT on the slip, card machines on local bank networks and a plan for load shedding. Speed starts at the scanner. TimeWorks scans continuously, with no confirm step between items, and reads standard barcodes, price-embedded barcodes on weighed products and manual price look-ups from the same sale screen. A Zebra LI2208 barcode scanner reads EAN-13, Code 128 and UPC-A, and its stand turns it into a hands-free presentation scanner, so the cashier can pass items across it with both hands. The Toshiba TCx touch-screen till is built for continuous operation in high-traffic shops. At payment, an Ingenico or Verifone card machine linked to the till receives the amount straight from the POS, so nobody types it twice, and it works with Nedbank, FNB, ABSA and Standard Bank acquiring. A split payment takes part in cash and the rest by card in one sale.
Frequent transactions empty shelves fast. Every sale takes stock off in real time, from bread and milk to cold drinks and toiletries. Each product carries its own minimum level, and the low-stock report is sorted by supplier, so it becomes the order for your Makro, PnP Wholesale or local distributor run. When the delivery arrives, a goods-received entry adds the stock back and records the supplier's invoice cost.
Many small sales also mean many chances for a till to come up short. Each cashier works in their own session, so a mid-day shift change gets its own cash-up instead of waiting for close. The variance report compares the cash the system expected with the cash that was counted, and voids are logged against the cashier who made them.
South African rules have reached small shops too. In November 2024 the President ordered all spaza shops and food-handling facilities to register with their municipalities within 21 days. The government's spaza registration guide says the trading permit application must include a description of the goods or services the business sells. CoGTA later extended the deadline for spaza shops and other food-handling outlets to 28 February 2025. A POS does not register your shop, but its product list is an up-to-date record of everything you sell.
Some lines need a check at the counter. Under section 4(1) of the Tobacco Products Control Act 83 of 1993, tobacco products may not be sold to anyone under the age of 18. If your shop sells tobacco or alcohol, we recommend a second display for age-verification prompts. If liquor is a big part of your trade, our bottle store till setup goes further.
Then the South African basics. SARS levies VAT at the standard rate of 15%, and from 1 April 2026 the compulsory VAT registration threshold rose from R1 million to R2.3 million. On TimeWorks the VAT on each line comes from the product record, never from the cashier. Eskom ended winter 2025 with 26 hours of load shedding across four evenings, supplying electricity 97% of the time. Power and internet still drop, and a busy counter cannot stop.
