Six Features That Run
Your Deli.

Purpose-built modules that address the real operational demands of deli businesses in South Africa.

scale

Scale Integration

Connect a compatible retail scale directly to the POS so that the weight of sliced meats, cheeses, olives, salads, and prepared foods transmits to the transaction screen without manual entry. Price calculation at the configured per-kilogram rate applies instantly, and the transaction records the exact weight sold. This eliminates weighing-and-typing errors that cause either overcharges that upset customers or undercharges that quietly erode your margins.

alarm

Sell-by-Date and Freshness Management

Assign preparation or pack dates and shelf-life periods to every deli product. The system flags items approaching expiry on the staff dashboard so counter staff can prioritise selling those items first, suggest them to customers, or apply a markdown discount before they hit the bin. Expired product removal prompts prevent accidental sale of out-of-date items, which is a food safety obligation under South African food handling regulations.

Made-to-Order Item Management

Handle custom orders, for example, a specific weight of a particular ham sliced thinner than usual, with modifier and specification notes that appear on the counter display and the receipt. Pre-orders for catering platters, cheese boards, and charcuterie selections are captured with collection dates and deposit payments, and they flow into the daily preparation schedule so the deli team knows in advance what needs to be prepared before opening.

queue

Counter Service Queue Display

A customer-facing queue number display and staff counter screen keep service orderly during busy Saturday mornings without the chaos of free-for-all counter service. Customers receive a printed or displayed number at entry, staff serve in sequence, and the queue status is visible on the counter display. Order tickets print at the counter for complex orders requiring preparation.

Fresh Stock and Wastage Tracking

Track stock in kilograms at the product level. Every weighed sale deducts the exact gram amount from the product's stock balance. End-of-day stock reports compare opening stock through deliveries and sales to expected closing stock, with any variance recorded as wastage or adjustment. This gives you accurate wastage data to inform your ordering quantities and reduce the cost of throwing away expensive aged cheese or cured meats.

Daily Special Pricing

Configure daily specials on specific deli products with a promotional price that activates and deactivates automatically at the configured time. A special on smoked salmon on a Wednesday afternoon to move Friday's delivery surplus is configured once and runs on schedule without staff needing to remember to change the price. All specials are logged in the reports as promotional revenue for your financial analysis.

Common Questions

Deli-specific questions about TimeWorks POS.

TimeWorks connects to compatible retail scales via USB or serial interface. When a cashier selects a weighed product on the POS and places the product on the connected scale, the weight reading transfers to the transaction screen automatically. The system applies the configured price per kilogram or gram, calculates the line total, and adds the item to the transaction. The receipt prints the exact weight and the per-unit price so the customer can verify the charge. Compatible scale brands include common models used in South African deli and fresh food retail. Our installation team connects and tests the scale integration during the setup process and trains counter staff on the workflow.
When deli products are prepared or delivered and unpacked, a staff member enters the pack date and the product's shelf life in the back-office system. The system calculates the best-before date and stores it against that batch. The daily staff dashboard displays a list of items where the best-before date is within the configured alert threshold, for example, within 24 hours. Staff can apply a markdown discount to those items from the alert screen, which activates a promotional price for those specific items immediately. If a product is not sold and the best-before date passes, the system prompts removal from sale. All wastage events are recorded for the end-of-day report so you can track which products consistently cause waste and adjust your order quantities accordingly.
Yes. Pre-orders are captured at the counter or over the phone and recorded in the system with the customer's name, contact number, order specifications, collection date, and a deposit payment. The pre-order appears in the daily preparation schedule on the day before collection, prompting the deli team to prepare the platter in advance. At collection, the pre-order is retrieved from the system, the deposit is applied against the balance, and the final payment is processed. This prevents the scenario where a customer arrives for a large catering order and it has not been prepared because the order was only on a paper notepad that the morning staff did not see.
TimeWorks supports dual-unit pricing for deli products. A wheel of Brie, for example, can be sold as a whole unit at a fixed price, sliced by the gram at a per-kilogram rate, or in pre-cut portions at a fixed portion price. Each selling method is a separate configuration under the same product record. The cashier selects the appropriate selling method at the point of transaction. If the customer wants 200 grams of Brie sliced off the wheel, the scale integration provides the exact weight. If they want a pre-packaged 150-gram portion, it scans at the portion price. Stock deducts in a consistent base unit, maintaining accurate remaining quantity regardless of which selling method was used.
