The Complete POS System,

That list is the standard one. A typical point of sale setup includes a cash drawer, a receipt printer, barcode scanners and an interface for processing card payments, alongside the computer that runs the till. The difference between suppliers is not the list. It is who sells it where you trade, who installs it and who fixes it when it stops.

Many answers to this question point to Toast, a US restaurant platform. Toast's own locations page lists its offices in Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, Taiwan, the UK and the US, and none in South Africa. Its first-quarter 2026 results describe Toast being made available to hotels across the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland and Canada. The four parts, and what we supply for each

Terminal. The terminal runs the till software and the touchscreen your staff use all day. We supply commercial terminals from Toshiba, Poslab and others. The Toshiba TCx touch terminal we supply comes as the TCx 810E or the TCx 820. Both are fanless, and Toshiba's TCx 820 and TCx 810E spec sheets rate them IP53 (the 810E is IP52 with peripherals installed): dust cannot get in enough to stop them working, and spraying water does no harm. It is listed from R12,995 to R24,995 excluding VAT.

Scanner. A scanner reads the barcode so nobody types in a price. Our standard choice is the Zebra LI2208 handheld scanner at R1,595 excluding VAT. Zebra's LI2208 specification sheet rates it for over 100 drops from 1.5 m at room temperature, environmental sealing to IP42 and a scan speed of 547 scans per second. It reads 1D barcodes, the kind printed on most retail products. If you also need to read 2D codes such as QR codes, we supply 2D scanners too.

Printer. A thermal receipt printer prints with heat, so there is no ink or ribbon to run out, only the paper roll. Our 80mm receipt printer with auto-cutter connects by USB, LAN or RS-232 and is R1,895 excluding VAT.

Drawer. The cash drawer holds the float and opens when the sale is done. The Maken mini cash drawer has a 4-bill, 4-coin tray and a printer kick connection to the receipt printer, and it is R685 excluding VAT. Full-size drawers are available for busier counters.

Most counters add a card machine as well. Ours is listed as the PIN pad and card machine. A customer display, a label printer or a scale can be added where the business needs one.

Five types of POS system

The same four parts can be arranged in different ways. These are the five types we supply:

• Countertop all-in-one terminal. One touchscreen unit at a fixed till, with the scanner, printer and drawer around it. This is the Starter package below.
• Tablet POS. Our 10-inch Android POS tablet, listed from R4,995 to R12,995, for markets, events and small counters. Tablets have made mobile POS possible, including table-side ordering.
• Wireless handheld. A handheld ordering terminal, listed from R6,995 to R14,995, so waiters take the order at the table.
• Self-service kiosk. Customers order and pay without a cashier. Our self-service ordering kiosk is listed from R18,995 to R35,000.
• Multi-till system. Several terminals linked to a dedicated server and network, each with its own peripherals. This is the Enterprise package below.

What a complete POS system costs in South Africa

You can rent the package or buy it. Monthly POS rental starts from R995 per month excluding VAT, and that fee includes the hardware, the software and support. If you already own hardware, our POS software plans are R350 or R500 per month excluding VAT. Daily rental for events is priced to the event: contact us for pricing.

To buy, add up the parts above for each till, and we quote the bundle with installation for your setup. Our prices are in rand and exclude VAT, which SARS sets at 15%, so add it to your budget.

How to choose a complete POS system in South Africa

Local supply and repairs. Ask where the hardware comes from, who installs it and who repairs it. All the hardware we supply carries the full manufacturer warranty, and our service team provides on-site repair and replacement support across the Cape Town area.

Power. Plan for load shedding even in a quiet spell. Eskom's load-shedding page shows the current status and the schedule for your area. Put each terminal and printer on a UPS battery backup so a power cut does not close the till.

What you already own. Our software works with a wide range of peripherals, so we can check your existing printer, scanner or drawer and keep what still works.
